St. Petersburg is a northern capital of Russia, one of the most beautiful cities of the country
Can you imagine the city built in several years, on the swamps during the war? That’s what St. Petersburg is.

St. Petersburg is a unique city. It was built on swamps around the river Neva in a very hard and dramatic period of Russian history - during the war against Sweden. It grew up so quickly that people started to tell that St. Petersburg had been built by Peter the Great in the air and then it was lowed down and placed on the swamps, that could not absorb the whole city and it remained there.
During the 18-th century the present-day centre of the city was formed and St. Petersburg became known to Europeans as one of the most beautiful cities in Russia and in Europe. During the 19-th and 20-th centuries the city was considerably enlarged and now it is considered to be the second large city of Russia (after Moscow) with population about 5 mln. people.

St. Petersburg is a cultural and historical centre, capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 till 1918
The construction of St. Petersburg began in 1703. And already in 1712 Peter I transferred the capital of Russia from the ancient Russian city Moscow to St. Petersburg. The city became the centre of political and cultural life. All the main imperial residences, administrative establishments, educational centers, mansions of the nobility etc. were situated here. All the main celebrations, balls, receptions took place in St. Petersburg and its suburbs.

After the October Revolution the new formed government moved to Moscow and the capital was transferred to Moscow too. But we say that Russia has 2 capitals now: the political one is Moscow and the cultural one is St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg is the most beautiful city on the river Neva, famous with its canals, bridges and embankments
St. Petersburg is often called Venice of the North, because of its beautiful rivers and canals. The city is built on water, as well as Venice and Amsterdam. They make mysterious atmosphere especially in summer when they reflect the facades of the buildings round the clock during the period of white nights*. There are 65 rivers and canals within the city limits, about 500 bridges, including draw bridges that are opened at night for the ships during the navigation that starts in April and ends in December.

The main waterway of the city is the river Neva. It flows from the lake Ladoga and empties into the Gulf of Finland. It is only 74 km long but it has always been one of the main waterways of the country.

The city’s numerous canals were built not only to prevent flooding but also to symbolize Russia as the naval power, having one of the most strategically important points – the outlet to the Baltic Sea. Now the water-tour along rivers and canals is regarded as one of the most fascinating tours around the city.

* White nights
Can you imagine the time when sun almost never goes down and night lasts for about 1-2 hours? Come to St. Petersburg in summer from the end of May till the end of July and you will feel the romance of this period.
